BAHIA SAN CARLOS - SAN CARLOS BAY

Is a resort community on the Sea of Cortes (gulf of california) in San Carlos Bay , Sonora , Mexico . It is located about 12 miles northwest of the port city of Guaymas , and 80 miles Southwest of Hermosillo, capital of Sonora . It is the nearest major resort to the United States on the west coast of Mexico .

DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY

San Carlos Bay was developed as a resort alternative to the more crowded and commercial areas in Mexico . Because of its unique location, situated between the unspoiled beaches of the Sea of Cortes and the Bacochibampo mountains, San Carlos Bay has remained largely “undiscovered” by tourists. The resort was designed as a quiet haven for those who enjoy an active outdoor life amid dramatic natural beauty.

BRIEF AREA HISTORY

The area was originally inhabited by the Guaymas and Yaquis Indians, and the first historical mention of a settlement was made in 1671 by the first Jesuit priests to enter Sonora .

Father Kino, the missionary who arrived in 1680, establised the Mission of San Jose de Guaymas here, one of many missions the famous padre founded on his long journey through Sonora . In 1769, the first Spanish settlement was established and given the name Villa de San Fernando de Guaymas Guaymas served as a supply point during the U.S Civil War and later Arizona Indian wars, when troops supplies when shipped from San Francisco to Guaymas to be transported by wagon train to the Arizona Territory.

Around the turn of the century, copper, gold an silver mining in Sonora ’s interior became of major importance, and Guaymas grew as a trading port. In 1910, steamers from California , China , Germany and England called regularly at the port. Later, as the area’s role as receiving point for supplies declined, it grew in importance as a fishing port, both for commercial and sports fishing.

In addition to the special activities and fiestas noted previously, there are many other points of interest to visitors. A few are listed below :
